Over the next two weeks, the atmosphere in the office became increasingly frantic. Bailey had Jane, Charlotte, and Mary, the head of finance, working on the grant proposal almost constantly, which meant that everyone had to pick up extra work to cover their usual jobs. On top of that, Daria would only do the bare minimum to help with the application because she thought it was a waste of time, so Bailey kept having to ask Lydia, as the most tech savvy, to help them put together various complex budget reports. Daria’s unwillingness to pitch in made her even less popular with the NF staff than before. Everyone assumed she was trying to sabotage their chances of getting the grant because she wanted the magazine to close. Personally, Liz couldn’t help but wonder if Daria just didn’t want to spend any more time than necessary near Liz and the constant reminder of the night she’d let her standards slip so low.

It wasn’t only the grant proposal committee that was busy, either. Everyone seemed to be taking Bailey’s words to heart and upping their game. Tara launched a brand-new social media campaign to capitalize on their increasing engagement rates. Daniela, their designer, designed snazzy logos and adorable graphics to spruce up their look, and Finn stayed late incorporating them into the website. Katie started a series of “What Does the Nether Fields Mean to You?” articles, cowritten with various readers, to activate and engage with their fan base. Everyone was on a mission.

No one seemed to need Liz’s expertise for the proposal, however, so she focused on her article on Moira, which Charlotte wanted to run the first week of August, since it was usually a slow content month for them. Liz wanted it to be perfect. Even though Moira didn’t feel like she needed recognition, Liz still hoped that if she did this article justice, it would get her some.

Liz started working longer hours than she ever had, trying to get every sentence right. By the time she sent the article to Charlotte for review, Liz felt like it was good. Really fucking good. She had agonized over every line, and she was sure it was the best thing she’d ever written.

On the day the article went live, Liz kept trying to distract herself so she wouldn’t check her email and Twitter every five seconds. It took time for things to go viral, she knew that. But she couldn’t resist. That entire week, she refreshed her inbox constantly, waiting for news that her article had been shared by some huge celebrity or that a museum had committed to displaying Moira’s photographs for the first time.

A few notes did arrive—the kind of heartfelt emails that reporters dream about, telling Liz the article had made them feel seen and comforted. A few said that reading Moira’s advice had given them the courage to finally take the leap into pursuing their own dreams. Liz read those emails over and over until her eyes got teary.
